Compassion is a natural instinct, shaped and guided by culture. According to Spinoza, compassion (misericordia) is an emotion that arises when our own capacity for existence diminishes as we imagine the suffering of another: when we witness the defenselessness of a small living being, we encounter the fragility of our own existence.
